Carter was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for fighting Comanches on the upper Brazos River on October 10, 1871, during which action his left leg was shattered. He was forced into early retirement, and though he later recovered full use of the leg, he was not allowed to return to active duty. The present work, published when he was ninety, is the best known of his six booklets and three hardcover books he produced relating to his experiences on the frontier, and is considered the standard source on the military actions in west Texas during the period.
