Cast iron, 6.25 in. high x 5.75 in. wide. No maker marks visible. This is probably ca 1840, made for the W.H. Harrison campaign, but could be ca 1852 (Henry Clay) or 1888 (Benjamin Harrison). One that was sold previously in these rooms had 1888 cast into the tree trunk for the later Harrison campaign. The Benjamin Harrison campaign resurrected many popular symbols from the candidacy of his grandfather, William Henry Harrison, including the "coon," which was an early Whig party symbol. This example shows a bit of wear and may well be from the earlier campaign. Condition: Light rust in a few crevices, but overall very good.
