Engraved frontispiece before letters, title printed in red and black, 56 engraved views and maps, of which 50 double-page, numerous engravings throughout text. (Tears to vertical fold crease of six double-page plates, tear to upper margin of map of America not into image and without loss, one double-page plate with crayon mark in margin, small hole to fore-margin of Z2.) Contemporary polished calf, covers tooled in blind with a central panel enclosing a lozenge with foliate cornerpieces, gilt spine with red morocco gilt lettering-piece and FFF stamp at foot (joints rubbed and splitting at head and tail, tailcap slightly defective, boards and edges scuffed, corners slightly bumped). Provenance : Francis Ferrand Foljambe (binding). FIRST EDITION, complete with the 'Arx Carolina' and 'Virginia pars Australis & Florida' plates, and the engraving on p.200. A translation of Arnold Montanus, De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld , but with additions concerning New England, New France, Maryland and Virginia.
