Title: Official program and log, thirteenth annual National Air Races: Los Angeles Airport, Los Angeles, California, July 1 to 4, 1933 Author: Place: Los Angeles Publisher: National Air Races Date: 1933 Description: 40 pp. Illustrated from photographs, drawings, etc. 30.6x23 cm (12x9"), color pictorial wrappers. Scarce program for the 1933 air races, held at Los Angeles, with schedule of races, and notably brief biographical sketches of the participants, with photographic portraits. The pilots include Amelia Earhart, German WWI pilot Ernst Udet, Roscoe Turner, Italian acrobatic pilot Tito Falconi, and others. Also pictured are may of the aircraft scheduled to be flown. OCLC/WorldCat lists four copies, at the California State Library; California State University Fullerton; California State University Long Beach; and the Los Angeles County Public Library. The 1933 National Air Races moved back to Los Angeles CA at Mines Field, home of the 1928 races. Cliff Henderson, managing director trimmed the event down to four days by eliminating the Derbies and ATC races. The Bendix transcontinental would fly from East to West for the first departing from Floyd Bennett Field NY. The Bendix Race attracted no less than ten entries including two women pilots, Amelia Earhart and Ruth Nichols. The only bi-plane entered was the Laird Solution which had been highly modified. Two new aircraft, the Vance Flying Wing and the Seversky SEV-3 were on the aircraft entry list. The winner was famous Roscoe Turner a record-breaking American aviator who was a three-time winner of the Thompson Trophy air race, and widely recognized by his flamboyant style and his pet lion. One of the participants pilots was legendary German pilot Ernst Udet who lived in USA in early 1930th and was known as a stunt pilot and for playboy-like behavior. He flew for movies and for airshows. Udet joined the Imperial German Air Service at age 19, eventually becoming a notable flying ace of World War I, scoring 62 confirmed victories by the end of his life. The highest scoring German fighter pilot to survive that war, and the second-highest scoring after Manfred von Richthofen, his commander in the Flying Circus, Udet rose to become a squadron commander under Richthofen, and later under Hermann Göring. Lot Amendments Condition: Minor rubbing to wrappers, the whole with mild vertical crease; very good. Item number: 281340
