Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey, Smith, Elder, and Co., 1850. single volume as issued, second English edition, new edition revised, with first state title dated 1850, 8vo, (184 x 122mm), original publisher's elaborately stamped cloth, gilt lettering to spine, half-title, advertisement leaf at front, Biographical Notice of Ellis and Acton Bell, Edited and compiled by Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855) under the male pseudonym Currer Bell with her Editor's Preface, 504pp. plus 16pp. publishers advertisement at rear dated December, 1850. The second state being 1851. [Sadleir 350a; Smith 63-69]. Emily and Anne Bronte's singular works were originally published by Thomas Newby, December 1847. Following Emily Bronte's death in 1848, Charlotte Bronte agreed for Smith, Elder & Co. to take over the publication of Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey from the unreliable Newby. Charlotte Bronte's Biographical Preface was the first official, public confirmation of the authors' true genders and confirmed authorship of the Bronte sister's novels.(Qty. 1).
