Northern Plains Beaded and Quilled Hide Pipe Bag, Lakota, c. 1870s, possibly owned by "Rain in the Face," the soft hide bag roll-beaded at the top with one lane of beadwork descending to a lower panel beaded on both sides, one side with box and border in dark blue and greasy yellow on a white center red ground, the other side with multicolor geometrics on a turquoise ground, polychrome quilled rawhide slats and fringe from the bottom, traces of yellow stain, (damage to the quilled panel), lg. 37 in. Provenance: Old tag from E. F. Eble, Art Collection, 284 Fourth Ave., New York, N.Y., written on the back "Sioux, Pouch and Pipe The property formerly of Rain in the face - the foe of Custer."
