Manuscript marriage certificate on vellum recording the wedding of Isaac Norris Jr. and Sarah Logan, signed by their family, friends and notables of Philadelphia Quaker society.
Philadelphia: 6 June 1739. 1 p., large vellum membrane (595 x 558 mm). Signed by Norris and Logan, as well as 41 guests and 10 witnesses, including Governor Thomas Penn. With later additions in the hand of Isaac Norris recording the births of their four children (and the early deaths of two) as well as the death of Sarah ("My beloved wife Sarah Norris Dyed at Fairhill October 13th 1744 about 2 o'clock PM / We lived together 5 year 4 month 7 days mutually happy in each other") and with a later notation in the hand of Mary Norris Dickinson recording the death of her father and adding the 1769 death of her sister Sarah. Docketed recto by Christopher Marshall indicating that the certificate had been entered into the Record. Condition : minor soiling and fading. a record of the joining of the two most important families of colonial philadelphia: arguably the most significant social event in the city's early history. This document marks what must have been a long-hoped-for day for the parents of both the bride and groom, the official union of the two families who each played such significant roles in the founding and initial growth of Pennsylvania. At the time of the wedding, Isaac Norris Jr. was the senior partner of the family firm Norris and Company, a position he had held since his father's death in 1735. The guests and witnesses who have signed this document are essentially a list of the most important Quakers in Philadelphia at the time. In the farthest right column below the names of the newlyweds are the bride's parents James and Sarah Logan, followed by the groom's mother Mary Norris. The groom's brothers-in-law, sisters and brothers sign next: Thomas and Mary Griffits, Richard and Hannah Harrison, Elizabeth, Deborah, Charles and Samuel Norris. The signatures of the bride's siblings follow: William, Hannah and James Logan. Other extended family members and friends are below: Samuel and Margaret Preston Sarah Lloyd, Israel and Rachel Pemberton, James and Sarah Read, Peter Lloyd and Lloyd Zachary. The top of the next column includes William Penn's son, daughter and son-in-law: Thomas Penn (then the Governor of Pennsylvania) and Thomas and Margaretta Freame.
