FIRST EDITION, AN IMPORTANT PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY NIXON TO HIS TOP POLITICAL AIDE, JOHN EHRLICHMAN, on the front free endpaper: "To Jeanne & John Ehrlichman with grateful appreciation for their tremendous assistance in crisis VI & for their making our visit to Century 21 such a memorable one-- from Dick Nixon August 12, 1962." No other copy of Six Crises has ever appeared at auction with such an important association. Crisis VI in the book was Nixon's failed race for the Presidency against Kennedy in 1960. Nixon recruited Ehrlichman to work in the campaign. Asked about campaigning at the time, Ehrlichman later said in an interview: "Campaigning was like running away to the circus." In 1975 Ehrlichman was convicted of conspiracy, perjury and obstruction of justice for his part in the Watergate break-in and cover-up. He coined a phrase that has become part of the political lexicon when he advised Nixon to make him the fall guy for Watergate and leave him "twisting slowly, slowly in the wind." Ehrlichman served 18 months in federal prison before returning to private life as an author and consultant. Provenance : Jeanne and John Ehrlichman (1925-1999).
