Nina Mae Fowler This Is Your Life, 2021 Pencil on Paper Signed verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) Known for her sumptuously detailed large-scale drawings and installations, Nina Mae Fowler's work interrogates themes of celebrity, beauty, power and sexuality. Fowler often uses subject matter from a seemingly bygone era to throw into relief strikingly similar contemporary narratives, such as abuses of power across industries and our own role as a consumer of celebrity culture. Education Graduated with a first in Fine Art Sculpture in 2003 from Brighton University Exhibitions/Awards Luminary Drawings: Portraits of Film Directors by Nina Mae Fowler, National Portrait Gallery, London, UK, 2019 The National Portrait Gallery awarded Fowler this major commission which features drawn portraits of British Film Directors, sitters included, Amma Asante, Ken Loach Sir Ridley Scott, Sir Sam Mendes, Asif Kapadia and Sally Potter The portraits form part of the museum's permanent collection. Fowler has also been shortlisted for numerous prizes and awards, including the Jerwood Drawing Prize (2015 & 2010), The Discerning Eye Drawing Bursary Award (2016), Aesthetica Art Prize (2014), Drawing Now Award (2014), Young Masters Prize (2012) and the BP Portrait Award (2008). Her works have been exhibited within the context of cultural institutions and museums including; Kunstsaele Berlin, Germany (Drawing WOW, 2020) and Neuer Kunstverein Aschaffenburg, Germany (Starke Frauen, 2013). Fowler has exhibited in galleries internationally, which includes frequent solo and group exhibitions in London (Cob Gallery, Lazarides), Paris (Galerie Suzanne Tarasieve, Galerie Dukan), Hamburg, Berlin (artnow Gallery), Leipzig and Hong Kong (Contemporary by Angela Li). Her works are held in notable private and public collections including; The National Portrait Gallery (UK), Balliol, Magdalen and New Colleges Oxford (UK), ColecciónAl Limite (Chile), Imago Mundi, Luciano Bennetton Collection (Treviso, Italy) and the ' Try-me' Collection, (Virginia, USA). In 2018, film director David Lynch's establishment Silencio in Paris held a retrospective of Fowler's work. Gallery Representation Cob Gallery, UK, Suzanne Tarasieve, France, art Now Gallery, Germany About the postcard artworks The life of actress Frances Farmer has been subject to dramatic fictionalisation, relentless scrutiny and mistruths. Having found fame in the 1930's she struggled with the image Hollywood forced upon her and spent the next decade in and out of psychiatric hospitals where she was mistreated and abused. She subsequently suffered from mental health issues for the rest of her life and was subject to a rumour that she had been lobotomised during one of her involuntary institutionalisations. In 1958 she appeared on "This is Your Life" to dispel years of speculation and innuendo. It is devastating to watch as she feels forced to explain herself, relive the worst times of her life and respond with perfect rationality. Her agony is writ large upon her face as she continues to be probed and pushed in front of an eternally unquenchable audience. This drawing is after a still from the broadcast."
