NIGHTINGALE, Florence (1820-1910). Notes on nursing: What it is, and what it is not . London: Harrison [1860]. 8 o. Original black pebbled cloth, modern black cloth case. Provenance : Alice Maud Stonehouse (ownership inscription). FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, without the notice "[The right of translation is reserved]" on the title-page, the textual errors uncorrected, and the plain yellow endpapers, as in the earliest known copy (Bishop & Goldie, 1962). Intended to "give hints for thought to women who have personal charge for the health of others", which Nightingale considered to include the vast majority of women at some time in their lives. She included statistics showing over 65,000 women employed as nurses in 1851, some less than 10 years old. Nightingale stressed the importance of good nursing for recovery, and the fact that no medical knowledge was required to be a good nurse. While she did not herself know the bacterial theory of infectious diseases, she did realize the importance to health of fresh air, cleanliness, pure water and good drainage. Cushing N981; Garrison-Morton 1612; Grolier Medicine 71; Heirs of Hippocrtaes 1884; Osler 7737; Waller 6872; Norman 1600. -- NIGHTINGALE. Notes on nursing: What it is, and what it is not . London: Harrison [1860]. 8 o. Publisher's advertisements on the end-papers. Original black pebbled cloth, gilt-lettered front cover (minor wear and fading). Provenance : L.A.K. Smith (ownership inscription). FIRST EDITION, second issue, without the notice "[The right of translation is reserved]" on the title-page, with the textual errors uncorrected. Norman 1601. -- NIGHTINGALE. Notes on nursing: What it is and what it is not . London: Harrison [1860]. 8 o. Publisher's advertisements on endpapers.
