NIDER, Johannes (1380-1438). Consolatorium timoratae conscientiae . [Cologne: Ulrich Zel, not after 1470]. Chancery 4 o in half-sheets (208 x 138 mm). Collation: [1-12 8 13-14 6] (1/1r text, 14/6r colophon, 14/6v blank). 108 leaves. 30 lines. Type: 1:96(99)G. Two- to four-line initial spaces. Rubricated with red Lombard initials with reserved decoration, red paragraph signs and underlines. (Slight browning to extreme edges, faint dampstain to lower corner.) Modern calf blind-tooled in the style of the 16th century. FIRST EDITION. Nider's Consolatorium is a discussion of conscience, based in large part on the teachings of St. Augustine, Gregory the Great and various medieval writers. It was printed at least eight times in the fifteenth century. The present edition is dated from the rubricator's inscription in a copy at the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
