NICOL, John (1755-1825) – HOWELL, John (1788–1863), editor. The Life and Adventures of John Nicol, Mariner. Edinburgh: William Blackwood. London: T. Cadell, 1822. The first edition . Nicol sailed with Nathaniel Portlock (c.1748-1817) to the Sandwich Islands and the Northwest coast of America. "He gives an intriguing account of his visit to the Hawaiian islands and of life on a South Sea whaler ... [he] mentions that the chief who killed Captain Cook stayed on their ship for three weeks" (Hill). In 1789 he served as steward for the Lady Juliana , a convict transport taking 245 female convicts to New South Wales.
