NEY MICHEL: (1769-1815) Marshal of France, Duc d´Elchingen and Prince de la Moskowa. Executed. A fine A.l.S., `Le M.al Ney´, with flourish, one page, 4to, Santiago de Compostela, northwest Galicia province in Spain, 1st of May 1809, to General Maurice Mathieu, in French. Ney reports on the last military events and about the Spanish insurgents stating in part `The political situation of this region, my dear General, is improving considerably. The rebels are everywhere returning to their tasks, and the honest people start speaking out openly in favour of peace…´ Ney further says `The right-wing column under Colonel Fririon, Commander of the 69th regiment, did find some men with arms who were dispersed. Troops will be back on the 5th. I intend to be back to La Coruña at the same time´ Ney was recently transferred the VI Corps from Mathieu, and before concluding requests an updated report from his correspondent, stating `I have not received any news from you since 30th April´ a curious complaint as this is the day before the present letter was written, `I urge you my dear General to send me news. I think that the troops of La Romana must be beyond La Navia according to the reports received from travellers´ Very small minor creasing to edges, otherwise G to
