Paris: Montalant, 1722. 4 o (245 x 186 mm). 12 folding engraved plates, engraved headpieces and initials by Herisset and after Chaufourier (some light marginal staining). Contemporary calf, spine gilt in six compartments, gilt lettered morocco lettering-piece (some rubbing to head and tail of spine and edges). Provenance : Paul Sabatier (ink stamp on title). Second edition in French, which "is greatly superior to the first of 1720, not only textually, but for its illustrations and typographical execution" (Babson). "This is the most beautifully designed and printed of all editions of Opticks, but just as disorganized" (Tufte, Beautiful Evidence p.112). Babson 140; Wallis 187.
