Title: New Travels Among the Indians of North America. Being a Compilation, Taken Partly from the Communications Already Published, of Captains Lewis and Clark, to the President of the United States, and Partly from Other Authors Who Travelled Among the Various Tribes of Indians. Containing a Variety of Very Pleasant Anecdotes, Remarkably Calculated to Amuse and Inform the Mind of Every Curious Reader; with a Dictionary of the Indian Tongue Author: Fisher, William, compiler Place: Philadelphia Publisher: James Sharan Date: 1812 Description: 300 pp. Wood-engraved portraits of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark as double-frontispieces. 7x4, period sheep, leather spine label. The "apocryphal" Lewis and Clark, first published in 1809, in response for the growing demand by the public for more information on the expedition. Though the present edition is more honest in its title, when first issued the implication was that it was an official publication, though it is actually little more that a compilation and rehashing of Jefferson's Message of 1806, Patrick Gass's Journal published in 1807, and plagiarizations of portions of Jonathan Carver and Alexander Mackenzie Despite its suspect origins, and the massive criticism it has received from scholars, it is important in that it helped to shape the impressions of America at the time. Ownership signatures of Henry Johnson (three, one of them dated 1816), Esther Johnson, and a few other inscriptions to endpapers and flyleaves. Lot Amendments Condition: Covers well rubbed and worn, ingeniously but rather crudely restitched with two pieces of string; contents stained, soiled and darkened, but quite legible, just good, sold as is. Item number: 160592
