AN IMPORTANT AND VERY RARE MAP OF LONG ISLAND AND NEW YORK, which first appeared in the first edition of the English Pilot Book four in 1689. This was the first atlas to contain English charts devoted to the American Colonies. The chart can be dated by several place names, Staten Island shows the name Wells, the home of Philip Wells, Surveyor General of the Colony of New York in 1686. The chart shows Perth Amboy (Perth city), the capital of East New Jersey, which was founded in 1682. As to the rarity of the complete Pilot Book four, Coolie Verner located only 8 complete copies of the 1st three issues, 1689, 1698, 1706. Stokes.
