'Amo el amor de los marineros Que besan y se van. Dejan una promesa. No vuelven nunca mas ...' Neruda's much loved early work, the eight-line Amo el amor de los marineros was written in Santiago when he was eighteen and first printed in the Canción de Adios in the university review Claridad , no. 66 (Santiago, 26 August 1922). It was published as the third poem of Farewell y los Sollozos in the collection entitled Crepusculario the following year ( Obras Completas , Barcelona, 1999, vol. I, page 122, no. 3). It was to remain the work for which he was best known in Chile long after he had moved on to different forms and had published other acclaimed collections. The present manuscript was written in the autograph book of an admirer at Temuco, his birthplace, during his return to Chile in 1937-38 when, after a period of service as Chilean consul in Rangoon, Java and Barcelona, his appointment as consul in Madrid had just been confirmed. While in Chile he supervised the publication of an edition of his works, and gave readings and lectures. (2)
