RARE FIRST EDITION of the earliest treatise disclosing some, but not all, closely guarded secrets of glassmaking. Neri ‘appears to have learned the art of glassmaking at Murano, near Venice, and to have continued his studies of this and other chemical arts in the Low Countries … The main part of the text deals with the coloring of glass with metallic oxides to give not only clear and uniform colors but also various veined effects’ ( DSB ). Ferguson II, 135: ‘Hardly any of the older authorities seem to know this edition’; I Giunti , 338; Wellcome I, 4526.
