NELSON, HORATIO, Viscount and EMMA HAMILTON]. 38 works of printed vocal music by various composers. London, Dublin, various publishers, n.d. [c. 1801]. Bound together, folio, contemporary red half morocco and marbled boards, upper cover with black morocco gilt-lettered label: "Horatia Nelson Nelson," binding worn, fragment detached from backstrip. FIVE WORKS SIGNED "LADY HAMILTON," in ink ("Mrs Jordan's...Hear both sides," "Welcome as the flowers in May," "My care and labour end with day," "Di furor per me s'accenda," "Ah voi numi in tante pene"). The fourth item is also dated but the year has been cropped away by the binder ("March 25th 180-"). One song in the collection: "The British Fair with Three Times Three" contains additional fourth and fifth verses in manuscript: "Brave Nelson who by Fate in war/of his right arm bereft/full well he drubbed the Galic foe/Een with the one that's left"--"Let's imitate his [--]/and toast left-handed [--] right/the veterans of the Nile [--]/The Bumpers filld the [--]". Horatia Nelson, the illegitimate daughter of Nelson and Emma Hamilton, was born on 29 or 30 January 1801. Soon after her mother's death at Calais on 15 January 1915, Nelson's brother, the Earl Nelson, in his capacity as trustee for the child, brought Horatia back to England. It is likely that the present collection was bound before 1805, since Emma Hamilton lived in reduced circumstances after Nelson's death. The "Horatia Nelson Nelson" label was probably affixed to the cover in 1815, or soon after, while Horatia was in the care of the Earl Nelson.
