NELSON, Horatio, Viscount (1758-1805). Autograph letter signed ('Nelson') to Lady Hamilton ('My dear Lady Hamilton'), n.p., 'Saturday Morn', n.d. [3 January 1801], one page, 4to , integral address leaf (2 small repairs to blank portions of address leaf). Provenance : Edwin Wolf 2nd Collection (Christie's sale, 21.6.1989, lot 234). A letter written when 'not in the best of spirits', and dreading the fatigue that will result from attending the funeral of William Locker. 'I have had my days of Glory, yet I find this World so full of jealousies & envy that I see but a very faint gleam of future comfort'. He hopes on returning from 'this melancholy procession' to find 'some alleviation for the cold looks and cruel words' of his enemies among his friends in Grosvenor Square. Locker, who died on Boxing Day, 1800, had been the captain of the Lowestoffe on which Nelson was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in 1777, and Nelson regarded him with great affection, loyally attending his funeral on 3 January 1801.
