The Scalawagons of Oz.
Bound typed manuscript with numerous corrections in pencil and some ink in the author's hand as well as the editor’s, 1941. 163 ff. Small folio (290 x 220 mm). Cloth-backed black papered boards with color pictorial label. Provenance : gift of Frank J. O'Donnell of Reilly & Lee Co. to Fred M. Meyer. Includes printer’s proof of the copyright page; and publication notes tipped in at front and back; and a mock-up of the dust jacket for an unpublished British edition of Hutchinson's Books for Young People of London (probably drawn by Dick Martin) laid in. The original title “The Fairy Tribes of Oz” was crossed out and replaced with “Scalawagons of Oz” on the first page of text. Unlike The Wonder City of Oz (1941), The Scalawagons of Oz went to press largely as Neill wrote it. Although there were extensive editorial changes, the story was not rewritten as with the previous Oz book. Apparently Neill did not provide Reilly & Lee with carbon copies of this manuscript for a note at the back reads, “ No carbon of this ms. Don’t lose any copy .
