Beschreibung:

Needlework Sampler, worked by Jane Hoopes, Hollis School, Goshen, Chester County, Pennsylvania, c.1765, worked in wool yarns on a linen ground, with stitched rows of flowers, alphabets, and initials, likely members of Jane's family, over the inscription "Jane Hoopes the Daughter of John Hoopes and Christian his wife made her sampler in the 12th year of her age 1765 ----- Hollis School Misin(?) Goshen Finished October 23-- 1765," over a panel with flowers, a heart, and initials, (scattered yarn losses, toning), 16 x 10 1/2 in., in a molded mahogany frame. Note: A provenance of the sampler passed down through Jane's older brother John through 1976 and and brief genealogy of the family is inscribed on the reverse. A genealogical record indicates Jane, the maker of the sampler, was one of nine children born to John and Christiana (Reynolds) Hoopes. She was born February 9, 1754 in Chester County, Chester, Pennsylvania. The record is included with the sampler.
