Title: Nautical and Hydraulic Experiments, with Numerous Scientific Miscellanies Author: Beaufoy, Colonel Mark Place: London Publisher: Printed at the Private Press of Henry Beaufoy Date: 1834 Description: [3] leaves, [cxx],688 pp. 16 engraved plates and 8 double-page tables inserted. Author's engraved presentation page inserted before half-title. 12½x10, original sea-green cloth embossed with floral motif, paper spine label. Numbered 137 of an unspecified printing stated on verso of title page. Colonel Mark Beaufoy (1764-1827) was an astronomer and physicist who began experimenting with the resistance of water to moving objects as an adolescent in his father's brewery. He was eventually largely responsible for the foundation of the Society for the Improvement of Naval Architecture in 1791, under which auspices the experiments described in this volume were conducted at the Greenland Dock in 1793-98. The publication of the findings of the experiments here, many years later, was undertaken by the author's son. The copy with engraved presentation leaf to Robert Viscount Melville (Robert Saunders Dundas, 1771-1851) Lot Amendments Condition: Covers worn and scuffed, split at top of front joint, spine label stained and rubbed, edge of front free endpaper glued down to front board, some foxing to plates. Internally mostly unopened and text quite bright and clean. Good. Item number: 168341
