Natural History - Fossil African 'T-Rex' Dinosaur Tooth Cretaceous Period, 100-93 million years BP A large example of a Carcharodontosaurus saharicus African T-rex tooth with good enamel and visible serration to both edges. 27.6 grams, 69mm (2 3/4"). Fine condition. Provenance From an old Lincolnshire collection, acquired during the 1980s; from the Tegana formation of the Sahara Desert, Morocco. Footnotes Carcharodontosaurus was a gigantic carnivorous carcharodontosaurid dinosaur that lived around 100 to 93 million years ago, during the late Albian to early Cenomanian stages of the mid-Cretaceous Period. It was discovered to be the second largest predatory dinosaur, larger than Tyrannosaurus and Giganotosaurus, but not as large as Spinosaurus. The Carcharodontosaurus is named after the shark genus Carcharodon (from the Greek karcharo meaning "jagged" or "sharp"), odonto meaning "teeth" and sauros, meaning "lizard": "jagged-toothed lizard" or "sharp-toothed lizard".
