Title: [National Railway Map of North China, Showing Interruption and Destruction by War - in Chinese] Author: Place: [No place, most certainly China] Publisher: Date: c.1940s Description: Crudely printed with some color, a few manuscript notations. 38.5x54.5 cm. (15¼x21½"), folded. Rare map showing the status of railway functionality between Peiping (Beijing) in the north down to roughly Shanghai in the south. Dated November 20, with no year given - the specific dating of the map indicates the flux of railway functionality during the tumultuous period of war against Japanese invaders: To retard Japanese advance, the Republican government dismantled a number of railway lines. Accordingly, the map is color-coded, with blue indicating functional lines; red indicating non-operational segments, and black showing rail lines of indeterminate status. The primitive printing and manuscript annotations illustrate the chaotic nature of a China in flux: Japanese domination exacerbated by the internal conflict that pitted the Chinese Communist Party against Chang Kai-Shek’s Republic government and regional warlords. Lot Amendments Condition: Some toning, fine or nearly so. Item number: 258043
