NATIONAL ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION 1901-1904 -- [ROBERT FALCON SCOTT (1868-1912)] [ Scientific Results ]. London: The British Museum and The Royal Society, 1907-13. 11 volumes and portfolio of plates, large 4to (305 x 230mm). Titles, plates, photogravures, maps and illustrations. Original red buckram-backed cloth, spines gilt (spines faded, with library labels, extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance : Given by the Trustees of the British Museum (some vols with presentation slips) -- vol. II (Zoology) presented to Sir Clements Markham (presentation letter dated 1907) -- Miss S. Clements, presented to -- Bath Public Reference Library (library labels, printed and blind stamps). Together with : [Sir CLEMENTS R. MARKHAM], autograph letter (incomplete draft, with many cancellations) to [A.B.] Kempe, 9 November 1908, pointing out inaccuracies in the preface to 'the Antarctic Physical volume', with detailed explanations on who planned the 'simultaneous magnetic observations'; with autograph manuscript notes titled 'Southern Ocean, within & without the Antarctic Circle', listing Antarctic birds, seals, whales, lichens and mosses etc, 6 pages, folio & 4to ; and : A.B. Kempe, autograph letter signed to Clements R. Markham, The Royal Society, 22 April 1909, 2 pages, 8vo concerning the progress of publication of the Scientfic Results . A COMPLETE SET OF THE FIRST EDITION, WITH AUTOGRAPH AMENDMENTS BY SIR CLEMENTS ROBERT MARKHAM, comprising: Natural History (London: The British Museum, 1907-12), in 6 vols as follows: I. Geology (Field-Geology: Petrography ), 10 plates, 2 folding maps inside pocket; II. Zoology (Vertebrata: Mollusca: Crustacea) . 33 plates (title lightly spotted); III. Zoology and Botany (Invertebrata: Marine Algae, Musci) . 51 plates and charts; IV. Zoology (Various Invertebrata ). 59 plates; V. Zoology and Botany . 28 plates; VI. Zoology and Botany . 8 plates. Meteorology (London: The Royal Society, 1908-13), in 2 vols as follows: I. Observations at Winter Quarters and on Sledge Journeys with Discussions by Various Authors . Frontispiece, 14 plates, 2 folding maps; II. Comprising Daily Synchronous Charts 1st October, 1901, to 31st March, 1904 , WITH AUTOGRAPH ANNOTATIONS AND CORRECTIONS BY SIR CLEMENTS MARKHAM on pp. v, vi, xii, 284, 344, 345 ('the proofs of this volume were not seen by Captain Scott or by any member of the expedition before publication. The volume contains both misrepresentations of the results of the expedition, and unjust reflections on its officers'). Physical Observations (London: The Royal Society, 1908), 2 maps, 21 plates. Magnetic Observations (London: The Royal Society, 1909), frontispiece, 43 plates. Album of Photographs and Sketches with a Portfolio of Panoramic Views (London: The Royal Society, 1908), text volume and portfolio, 165 plates, including photogravures, the portfolio containing the maps and folding plates no.s 129-152 (one plate lightly browned, occasional light spotting). The Scientific Results of the first Scott expedition, including the first aerial view of the Antarctic, and the first report of a nesting colony of the Emperor Penguin; 'all are handsome works and fitting testimony to the extraordinarily broad and thorough scientific investigations conducted by the expedition scientists and authorities back home' (Rosove). The Album of Photographs , has been described as the 'most glorious and popular work among the reports of the Discovery expedition... a large scale photographic and illustrative study of Antarctic landscapes and wildlife' (Rosove).
