(4to) 27x21.5 cm (10¾x8½"), half magenta morocco and marbled boards, gilt decorated spine with title lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges. First Edition. The accounts of Denham and Clapperton of their important explorations in Africa; by the time of this publication Clapperton had left on his second (and last) journey into the African interior, but he left his journal to be prepared for the press. Major Dixon Denham and Lieutenant Hugh Clapperton were the first Europeans to travel across the Sahara, return safely and write about it. With the armorial bookplate of John Maxton. Lot Amendments Condition: Some wear and rubbing to binding with light sunning to spine, corners lightly bumped; occasional light foxing not affecting illustrations, some offsetting from plates, a bit of irregular creasing and offsetting to map and a few small closed tears at stub, a solid and handsome copy; very good.
