Including the Reports of Commander, now Captain, James Clark Ross... and the Discovery of the Northern Magnetic Pole...[with] Appendix to the Narrative of a Second Voyage... Author: Ross, John Place Published: London Publisher: A.W. Webster Date Published: 1835 Description: 2 volumes. Main volume: [8], xxxiii, [1], 740 pp. Illustrated with 16 steel-engraved plates including frontispiece; 6 colored lithographed plates (1 of which is a plan); 3 color mezzotints; 6 maps (1 of which is a large folding hand-colored chart of the Arctic regions). Appendix: xii, 120, cxliv, cii + 1 errata pp. 20 engraved and lithographed plates, including a frontispiece portrait of Ross (many of the plates are colored or hand-tinted). (4to) publisher's blue cloth, spines stamped in gilt; volume 1 rebacked with original spine laid down, hinges reinforced. First Edition, large paper copy. "Narrative and scientific results of expedition to Boothia Peninsula in the Victory, and return by sledge, boat, and the Isabella. Expedition was financed by Felix Booth and led by Sir John Ross with his nephew, James C. Ross second in command and head naturalist" – Arctic Bib. The expedition survived for four winters in the Arctic, during which James Clark Ross discovered the North Magnetic Pole. Field lauds the "sumptuous printing which makes every page a picture, has even its luxury enhanced by the splendid steel engravings and lithographs... Everywhere through the narrative is interwoven the records of aboriginal life as it appeared to the explorers...." The scarce appendix included here features sections on the Boothian Eskimos and natural history, with many well-executed portraits and illustrations. Although produced to accompany the Narrative, the Appendix is much less common, and may have been printed in a smaller number. Arctic Bib. 14866; Field 1321; Hill p.261.
