Title: Narrative of a Mission to Bokhara in the Years 1843-1845 to Ascertain the Fate of Colonel Stoddart and Captain Conolly Author: Wolff, Joseph Place: Edinburgh Publisher: William Blackwood & Sons Date: 1852 Description: xxi, [i], 346 pp. (8vo) 18.5x11 cm (7¼x5"), original blindstamped cloth, gilt spine. Seventh Edition. Presentation, copy, signed by Wolff on the front free endpaper. Joseph Wolff, A Jewish Christian missionary, traveled widely and was known as the "missionary of the world." In 1843 Wolff went to Bukhara to seek two British officers, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Stoddart and Captain Arthur Conolly, who had been captured by the Emir., Nasullah Khan in June 1842. They had in fact been executed, and as Wolff later described, he was only spared death himself because the Emir laughed uncontrollably at Wolff's appearance in full canonical garb. His Narrative of this mission went through seven editions between 1845 and 1852. Lot Amendments Condition: Wear, soiling and some dampstaining to cloth, some tearing to cloth at head of spine; hinges starting, dampstaining to endpapers and a few leaves at front and rear, remnants of bookplate on front pastedown; good.
