NAPOLEON I -- INVASION OF ENGLAND A collection of four manuscripts on the prospects of a French invasion of England, comprising: Manuscript in French, 'Memoire Militaire sur l'Angleterre', a neat copy, an analysis of the coastal defences on the east coast of England, 'depuis le Comté de Northumberland ... Jusqu'au Comté de Sussex inclusivement', an anonymous work by a professed amateur, 'C'est dans mon Cabinet, sur des Cartes ... que je travaille, mais c'est après des principes militaires invariables', proposing a number of possible landing points, including 'Rye et Romney', considering also suitable departure points for an invasion flotilla, approximately 150 pages, folio (numbered 23 - 169), a few separated leaves, in individual bifolia pricked for gathering; Manuscript, 'A Plan proposed for arming the Inhabitants of the Metropolis', London, 17 April 1798, a neat copy, including a table showing the ease with which 50,000 men might be raised for the defence of the city, 5 pages, folio (splits to centre folds, the last leaf split through); [Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount MELVILLE]. An anonymous letter addressed to Melville, n.p., 17 April 1798, an eccentric letter on national defence, drawing an extended analogy between the British Empire and the human body, and proposing the extreme importance of attention to the fate of livestock in the event of an invasion, '[the Government] shou[l]d single out, chuse or select some Person who knew the value of Sheep and Oxen & Pigs (M r Mellish wou[l]d be a proper person to apply to) ...', five pages, folio , integral address leaf; and a further manuscript 'The Proposals to the Vestry should be ...', on organisation of defence at Parish level, four pages, folio .
