NAPOLEON I, Emperor of France. Autograph endorsement signed and dated ("approuv paris le 15 avril 1815 Np"), on a document signed by Marshal Davout ("M[arch]al Pr[ince] d'Eckmhl") as Minister of War, n.p. [Paris], 14 April 1815, 2 further endorsements. 2 pages, folio, printed heading of Ministre de la Guerre. DURING THE 100 DAYS: OATHS OF LOYALTY FOR THE OFFICERS OF THE ROYAL GUARD. The document concerns the declaration of loyalty to Napoleon, which he had instructed to be taken by all officers of the Maison Militaire du Roi: the Lieutenant General of the 1st Division wishes to communicate that 248 of the formulas have not been distributed, 130 of them because the addresses were unknown and 118 because the officers had left for the "dpartements" or followed the King. Only 17 declarations had been signed. Furthermore, information has arrived that around 600 Gardes-de-Corps have assembled at Alost near Brussels; the proposal is to write to the families of the absent officers and require them to provide proof that the officers are in France. A vivid indication, half-way through the Hundred Days, of the uncertain reception accorded to Napoleon in his last attempt to regain power.
