NAPOLEON I (Emperor of France, 1805-1821). Autograph annotation signed ('Np'), calculating the balance of his household accounts and concluding 'Le 26 mai il reste 616 schiling', St Helena, 26 May n.y. [1817], 13 words and groups of figures in autograph written below an item for laundry on the lower portion of a leaf cut from an account book, 110 x 200mm, annotation in the lower right corner by Louis Marchand (Napoleon's valet verifying the Emperor's handwriting, mounted on card inscribed in a later hand at the head ; and an autograph note signed by Marshal Ney conveying an order (1793), a copy of the Times including Wellington's Waterloo dispatch, and six other items. Napoleon drew up to #6,000 a year on two London banks for his expenses and the wages of his household on St Helena, and was meticulous in his examination of the accounts. Marchand was one of the three executors of his Will, and a member of the party who returned to St. Helena in 1831 to collect the Emperor's body. (9)
