NAPOLÉON BONAPARTE Secretarially prepared letter, signed "Np" by Napoleon as Emperor of the French, single sheet at one time folded, the text written by Napoleon's secretary Méneval to Napoleon's Minister of War, Henri Clarke, the Duke of Feltre, from Paris, 19th January 1812. 9 x 7 1/4 inches (23 x 18 cm); written in black ink, five lines in Méneval's hand. In very fresh condition, framed with an engraved portrait. The Emperor orders Clarke to send artillery carriages originally planned for the Siege of Magdeburg (in the East of Germany) to Wesel, where they can be best used to transport powder. This attractive letter demonstrates Napoleon's extraordinary attention to even the most minor details of his campaigns. Attached is an unsigned note of a secretary of the Duke of Feltre in French on a slip attached by straight pin at lower left. stating that he letter was forwarded on January 19 to General Gassendi, the General Inspector of the Artillery, Major-General since 1805, and State Councillor since 1806. This letter demonstrates that in spite of the Tilsit Treaty, both France and Russia know war is inevitable and start preparing for it. C
