Musicology. Friedrich Chrysander
Autograph manuscript of Chrysander's contributions to the 1863 Jahrbuch fur musikalische Wissenschaft
comprising:
1) Autograph title ("Jahrbücher für Musikalische Wissenschaft. Herausgegeben von Friedrich Chrysander. Erster Jahrbuch: 1863..."), dedication, contents and preface, 24 pages, small 4to (21 x 17cm), no place, 20 December 1862
2) Autograph manuscript of sections IV-VIII ("Deutscher Volksgesang im 14. Jahrhundert...Geschichte der Braunschweig=Wolfenbüttelschen Kapelle und Oper vom 16. bis zum18. Jahrhundert...Henry Carey und der Ursprung des Königgesanges God save the King...Händels Orgelbegleitung zu Saul und die neueste englische Ausgabe dieses Oratoriums...Beethovens Verbindung mit Birchall und Stumpff in London"), with numerous musical examples and extensive deletions, revisions and corrections, 636 pages, small 4to (21 x 17cm), no place or date [before 1863], pp.1-440 folded vertically; together with: a small collection of stray leaves from other unidentified autograph writings by Chrysander, some leaves concerning Handel, c.32 pages; and two other documents, one being a 1-page printed advertisement by Chrysander for a selection of miniature fruit trees from his market garden, creased, small tears to edges
The German music scholar Friedrich Chrysander can be regarded with justification as one of the founding fathers of nineteenth-century German musicology, writing essays and articles on a vast array of musical figures and musical themes. The present manuscript contains his own important contributions to the first of two notable essay collections entitled Jahrbuch für musikalische Wissenschaft (1863 and 1867). Such enterprises, as well as Chrysander's editorship of the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung (1868-1871 and 1875-1882), were undertaken largely with a view to funding his own central preoccupation - the publishing of a collected edition of Handel's works. Another, more unusual, source of finance was the sale of produce from his own market garden in Bergedorf, near Hamburg - a printed advertisement for which is included with this lot.
