At the bottom margin is the bold inscription "In remembrance of your sincere friend. Arthur S. Sullivan" in the verso of the sheet are four bars in another hand, inscribed "Souvenir d'amitie Laure Calmache(?). A LEAF IN SULLIVAN'S YOUTHFUL MUSICAL HAND, FROM THE SCORE OF HIS INCIDENTAL MUSIC TO THE TEMPEST , COMPOSED AS HIS GRADUATION EXERCISE FROM LEIPZIG UNIVERSITY, FIRST PERFORMED AT THE GEWANDHAUS IN APRIL 1861. ITS ENGLISH PREMIERE, IN LONDON AT THE CRYSTAL PALACE ON 5 APRIL 1862, WAS CONDUCTED BY AUGUST MANNS AND CONSTITUTED SULLIVAN'S FIRST INTRODUCTION TO THE BRITISH MUSIC PUBLIC. THE PORTION OF THE WORK REPRESENTED IN THIS FRAGMENT COMPRISES THE BEGINNING OF THE DANCE PORTION OF THE "DANCE OF THE NYMPHS AND REAPERS."
