Beschreibung:

MUSIC] BRAHMS, JOHANNES. Autograph postcard signed with initials , written in German. dated 7/11. [18]92, Vienna, addressed to his publisher Fritz Simrock in Berlin. 5 5/8 x 5 1/2 inches (9 x 14 cm), about eight lines, signed "Ihr J.B.," addressed to Simrock on verso with postal cancellations. Some timestaining of paper, faint traces of old album mounting on address side. An amusing Brahms note, to one of Brahms' closest associates and friends, apparently correcting a typo. In brief, the card reads "Just now I noticed "Vasco de Gama" by Bizet advertised on the back of Choudens' piano excerpt; I suppose that is the Ruma (Pompilius) from the Encyclopaedia. The piano excerpt cost only 5 francs, so the whole of Africa is apparently not being circumnavigated in 5 acts. I assume you have received [the] letter and correction, from your J.B." In later years, Brahms commonly signed with a version of his initials. A charming and witty note in which Brahms appears to be having some fun at the expense of Bizet. Simrock was a frequent correspondent and close friend of the composer. Provenance: Sotheby's, Dec 1, 1993, David Schulson Autographs, 2003 C
