MURATORI, Lodovico Antonio (1672-1750). Annali d'Italia dell'era volgare sino all'anno 1750. --e continuati all'anno 1764 . Naples: Giovanni Gravier, 1773-78. 4 o (288 x 218 mm), 14 volumes. LARGE-PAPER ISSUE. (Marginal staining in vols. 6, 7, 12, and 14.) ROMAN BINDING FOR POPE PIUS VI, probably by the Vatican bindery: contemporary gold-tooled blond calf, triple fillet round sides, large fan-shaped cornerpieces, large papal arm composed of individual tools in center of the sides, underneath the entwined initials CC, floral tools and morocco lettering pieces in compartments of spine, gilt edges (repair to some spine-ends, very slightly rubbed in places). Provenance : Giovanni Angelo Braschi (1717-99), elected Pope Pius VI in 1775 (binding, bookplate) -- ing. Roberto Almagia (bookplate). Fifth edition of a comprehensive work on the sources of Italian history, which remains a useful reference to the student of written and printed documents. Vol. 13 contains the index up to 1750, vol. 14 forms a supplement by an anonymous editor (Guiseppe Oggeri Vincenti?). Muratori, "the father of Italian history", was responsible for several other monumental works, including Antiquitates italicae medii aevi . Pius VI died a prisoner of the French in Valence. He is especially remembered today for extending the papal sculpture collection and founding the Museo Pio-Clementino. BBB Wittockiana 16; BBB Harvard 20 (in both cases the set is described as 12 volumes). (14)
