"MULTI-PLATINUM SALES AWARD PRESENTED TO KATE FERGUSON TO COMMEMORATE THE SUPPORT OF MULTI-PLATINUM CAREER SALES OF PUBLIC ENEMY" "PLATINUM SALES AWARD" cassette, "RUSH ASSOCIATED LABELS" and "Def Jam recordings" platinum record and in black frame with black and blue matte, 21 by 17 in. (43.2 x 53.3 cm).Catalogue noteEvery one of Public Enemy's first four albums were certified either gold or platinum. According to music critic Robert Hilburn, the '80s and '90s saw the group produce "the most acclaimed body of work ever by a hip hop act". Formed in 1985 by Chuck D (MC) and Flavor Flav (hypeman and instrumentalist), Public Enemy quickly rose to prominence for their music's political commentary, specifically targeting the American media and ongoing racism in the country. Public Enemy was one of the first Hip Hop groups to employ sonic experimentation on top of skilled and poetic, culturally conscious rhymes. According to music critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine, "PE brought in elements of free jazz, hard funk, even musique concrète, creating a dense, ferocious sound unlike anything that came before." Public Enemy was inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013, and bestowed the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 62nd Annual Grammies. The plaque offered here was a gift to Kate Ferguson, Editor-in-Chief of Word Up! and Rap Masters magazines, both entertainment publications geared towards Black American teenagers. Provenance: From the personal collection of Kate Ferguson
