Ali V Holmes, 1980 Colored pencil and crayon on paper Signed lower left "Muhammad Ali" and dated "Sept 80" Framed, with reproduction of photograph of Ali holding this painting to verso of frame This painting was done by Ali in New York on September 4, 1980, less than a month before his WBC Heavyweight Championship fight with Larry Holmes at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, October 2, 1980. Billed as "The Last Hurrah". Holmes won by technical knockout when the fight was stopped in the Tenth Round. Ali had appeared against medical advice, with his former doctor, Ferdie Pacheco, warning him against ever fighting again. Although the fight was not the direct cause of Ali's Parkinsons Disease, it is thought that the amount of blows he sustained during the fight compounded the development of the disease. Provenance: From the Collection of Rodney Hilton Brown, formerly President of Hilton Fine Arts, Ltd., publisher of Muhammad Ali's limited edition silkscreen prints, 1978. Literature: BROWN, Rodney Hilton, Muhammad Ali: The Untold Story: Painter, Poet & Prophet, Fairhaven, MA: The War Museum Press, 2021, p. 168 (illus.) Frame: 16 x 19 1/2 in.
