MORRIS (WILLIAM)Art and Beauty of the Earth, ILLUMINATED BY ALLAN F. VIGERS, including half-title decorated with leafy tendrils with large illustration of flowers in garden, opening text leaf with wide border composed of multiple flowers and 2 long beaked birds (dated "1903"), large illustration of birds and flowers on colophon, and approximately 48 tendril and flower infills within the text, signed "1903 A.V.F. 31" on colophon, crushed green morocco gilt BY KATHARINE ADAMS signed and dated ("K.A. 1906") on in lower dentelle, lettered on upper cover and spine, t.e.g., dentelles made up of small circles, joints slightly rubbed, 8vo, Chiswick Press, 1906FootnotesWILLIAM MORRIS' LECTURE ON "ART AND BEAUTY" FINELY ILLUMINATED BY A.F. VIGERS IN A BINDING BY KATHERINE ADAMS.
Allan Francis Vigers (1858-1921) trained as an architect, but was best known (like Morris) as a designer of textiles, furniture and especially wallpaper for the likes of Jeffrey & Co. and Liberty. He joined the Art Workers Guild in 1903, and exhibited at the Royal Academy and at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition in 1910. He "took a highly individualistic approach to pattern design, informed by his skills as an illuminator... He specialized in intricate florals, composed of a mass of small flower heads, mounted like jewels on white or dark-blue backgrounds. At once naturalistic and highly artificial, his patterns featured typical English garden flowers... simply and accurately depicted, but arranged in consciously artful synchronized formations" (Lesley Jackson, Twentieth Century Pattern Design, Princeton, 2002).
