Autograph letter signed ("Robt Morris esq") to Aaron Levy, "Hills" [Morris's Philadelphia home], 6 February 1798. 1 page, 4to, on pale green stationery, integral address leaf with panel by Morris, endorsement of recipient . Fine condition. WRITTEN THE MONTH OF HIS ARREST FOR DEBT. Morris writes at a time when his speculative ventures in western lands were beginning to collapse. Later in February, Morris was arrested by a creditor and imprisoned until his release in 1801. Morris--who declined the post of Secretary of the Treasury in Washington's first cabinet--writes: "In consequence of the information contained in your letter...Mr. Cottringer will send...two Copies of a Cautionary Advertisement [not present] signed by him as Secry. of the Pensylva. Property Company, and as you are about sending to the Sheriff of Huntington County, I request that you will cause one of these advertisements to be delivered to the sheriff of that county and the other to be put up Publickly at the place of Sale and to have it so done that we may hereafter be able to prove the delivery to the Sheriff and the putting up the other to Public view previous to the Sale.
