Mormonism and the Mormons: A Historical View of the Rise and Progress of the Sect Self-Styled Latter-Day Saints Author: Kidder, Daniel P[arish] Place: New York Publisher: G. Lane & P. P. Sandford Date: 1842 Description: 342 pp. (8vo) period full calf, gilt-lettered morocco spine label. First Edition. Blatantly anti-Mormon, written just before Bennett's disaffection and sensational exposé, so the author was not aware of the covert practice of polygamy. In fact, the author describes Bennett as a powerful member of the Mormon sect in this book. It is compiled largely from other sources as the author claimed no more personal experience with Mormonism than being on the same Mississippi River boat as Joseph Smith and other Mormons for two whole days. Nevertheless it accurately reflects the hostile reaction of so many of the "gentiles" that constantly forced the Mormons to migrate to new locations. Flake 4601; Howes K122. Lot Amendments Condition: Somewhat rubbed; front endpapers lacking, some early inkstains to front free endpaper, owner's name on title page, light foxing throughout, marginal dampstain to later pages of text, very good. Item number: 345423
