MORGAGNI, Giovanni Battista The Seats and Causes of Diseases investigated by Anatomy; in five books, containing a great variety of dissections, with remarks . London: A. Millar, T. Cadell, Johnson and Payne, 1769. 3 volumes, 4 o (260 x 202 mm). (Some spotting.) Contemporary calf (rebacked, rubbed). Provenance : John Brownhall, surgeon, Birmingham (signature on title, marginalia at beginning on Index in vol. III). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of the founding work of modern pathological anatomy, and the only complete translation into English. "After Antonio Benivieni Giovanni Battista Morgagni is considered the founder of pathological anatomy. His De Sedibus [i.e. The Seats and Causes of Diseases ], regarded as one of the most important books in the history of medicine, established a new era in medical research ... There is hardly a phase of pathological anatomy observable with the naked eye that Morgagni did not cover ... In accounts of about seven hundred necropsies, mostly by Morgagani, there are excellent descriptions of cancers, particulary of the pancreas, stomach, and rectum, and of renal calculi, cirrhosis of the liver, and atrophied kidneys. There is also an unmistakable description of typhoid fever" (Grolier Medicine 46). Blake, p.312; Osler 1180. See Garrison-Morton 2276 (original 1761 Latin edition); see PMM 206 (1761 edition). (3)
