MOORE, Thomas (1821-1887), editor. Illustrations of Orchidaceous Plants: a series of one hundred figures . . . representing the principal groups of orchids; accompanied by descriptions of the cultivated species . . . and directions for cultivation. London: Willis and Sotheran, 1857. 8° (242 x 150mm). 100 HAND-COLOURED ENGRAVED PLATES, 9 double-page and 1 folding, by I. Watts, G. Barclay, F. George, A. Aglio and others after Miss Drake and Miss C.C. Sowerby. (One or two plates lightly spotted.) Later red cloth, spine lettered in gilt (spine slightly faded), in protective plastic sleeve. FIRST EDITION of Moore's guide to orchids, which was strongly influenced by Dr. John Lindley's orchid studies. Moore's classification of the genera follows that laid down by Lindley in his Folia Orchidaceae , and Moore also re-used the original orchid plates from the Botanical Register , latterly edited by Lindley. Moore added some further orchid plates, to "render the volumes illustrative of all the genera worthy of cultivation", and was assisted in writing the letterpress by "able practical cultivators" who remain unnamed. The work was issued in parts, divided according to genus, and in coloured and uncoloured states, at a cost of 3s.6d. for six coloured plates, and 2s. for six uncoloured. Not in Nissen BBI or Stafleu & Cowan.
