LA CENERENTOLA COSTUME DESIGNS. 17 illustrations, sepia ink, some with swatches of fabric, 275 x 335 mm each, mounted on heavy card, all with identification notes in sepia ink on the bottom left and initialed "B.M." 1965. IMPORTANT GROUP OF COSTUME DESIGNS FOR GIOACHINO ROSSINI'S COMIC OPERA "LA CENERENTOLA." One of Montresor's most celebrated commissions was for his sets and costumes for the 1965 production of La Cenerentola at The Metropolitan Opera House. The period he chose was Italy in the 1840s. Rossini's adaptation of the famous Charles Perrault fairy tale was his immediate follow-up to his greatest opera The Barber of Seville. But it differed in important details from the French conte de fée: a Wicked Stepfather replaced the Wicked Stepmother; the Fairy Godmother becomes a philosopher; and Cinderella is identified by a bracelet rather than a glass slipper. These designs served as the basis for the illustrations in a charming picture book of Montresor's own retelling of the opera, Cinderella (1965).
