MONTI, Vincenzo (1754-1829) - Iliade di Omero. Brescia: Bettoni, 1810. A rare first edition of the translation of the Iliad by Vincenzo Monti, very important for the history of Italian literature of the 19th century; it was in fact one of the author's most successful works but it is above all remembered for the attack it suffered from Ugo Foscolo who defined Monti, who did not have a great knowledge of Homeric Greek, "great translator of Homer's translators", thus accusing him of relying mainly on other translations. 3 volumes, 8vo (208 x 133mm). Dedication to Prince Eugene de Behaurnais in the first volume, errata at the end of the first and second volumes (tear with loss of paper in the lower corner of p.25 of the first volume without loss of text, tear with small loss of paper in the margin of p.155 of the second volume without loss of text, slight sporadic foxing). Red calf from the first half of the 20th century with gilt decorations on spine and covers, marbled endpapers. Provenance: CN (contemporary private stamp on title). (3)
