MONTGOMERY, Bernard Law, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein (1887-1976). A series of 36 autograph letters signed and four letters signed to Lt General S.C. Kirkman, Eighth Army, 21 Army Group, British Army of the Rhine, Whitehall, Alton and elsewhere, 21 March 1943 - 14 February 1970, with two items of printed ephemera signed, together approximately 56 pages, various sizes ; together with a collection of 13 related letters and cut signatures (including a signature of Winston CHURCHILL cut from a letter to Montgomery, and signatures of other wartime allied generals) on 31 leaves, folio, in a binder; [ also ] a collection of printed works inscribed to Kirkman by Montgomery including Ten Chapters ('To Kirkie who accompanied me on much of the journey referred to in this book', 9 July 1945), the personal messages to the Eighth Army (inscribed 'in memory of our days in the Eighth Army', 21 August 1945), and the 21 Army Group personal messages (inscribed 20 June 1945); [ and ] a group of 8 photographs signed by Montgomery, including two portraits (one dated Berlin, 17 September 1945), and pictures of him saluting a crowd, driving through a town in the Low Countries and others. Montgomery's letters are always warmly appreciative of Kirkman's contribution with 50 Division: on 18 August he writes 'Now that the campaign in Sicily is over I would like to tell you how well I consider you and your Division have done. One somehow never imagines that 50 DIV can do otherwise than well'; others give military instructions in the course of 1943. On 16 September 1944 he writes 'I hope to be on German soil next week'. The letters in the immediate aftermath of the war refer to meetings and organisational matters; in the later letters in retirement Montgomery often writes warmly of Kirkman's sons.
