[ Bound with :] Leggi dell'Accademia de' SS. ri Gelati di Bologna. Bologna: li Manolesi, 1671. Engraved arms of the Accademia on title. 2 works in one volume, 4º (207 x 155mm). Contemporary vellum with manuscript title on spine. A collection of papers by Academy members, especially noted for Montanari’s first report ‘Spora la sparizione d’alcune stelle et alter novità celesti’ which catalogued many stars of variable brightness. Showing the mutability of the star Algol in particular, it struck ‘a fresh blow at the Aristotelian concept of the heavens’ immutability’ (see DSB IX, p.486). The two full-page woodcuts, the 'Pleiades Montanarij 1668' and the 'Pleiades Galilaei 1610' (pp. 391-92), compare the observations of Montanari and Galileo. The thick volume also contains 32 portraits, and 88 emblems which demonstrate, says Praz, 'the widespread interest of men of letters in the composition of their own devices' (2nd ed., p.77). A French edition followed in 1672. Cicognara 1830; Landwehr, Romanic 7; Riccardi I(ii) 172 (Montanari): ‘opusculo raro’; Vinciana, Aut. Ital. del '600 3509.
