Title: Mont Saint Michel and Chartres Author: [Adams, Henry] (1838-1918) Place: Washington Publisher: [Privately Printed for Henry Adams] Date: 1904 Description: vi, 355 pp. Illustrated with a few architectural drawings within the text. 12¾x9¾, full blue cloth, gilt-lettered maroon morocco spine label, housed inside a custom blue cloth chemise and a quarter morocco and blue cloth slipcase with gilt-lettered spine and raised bands. Special Presentation copy, one of only 100 copies. First Edition. Inscribed and signed by Henry Adams on preliminary printed leaf titled "Travels France" and signed: "For John L. Stewart, with the regards of Henry Adams, March 19, 1907." The next Adams book to be published after this one was his most famous, The Education of Henry Adams (1907), for which this copy of Mont Saint Michel and Chartres is inscribed in the first year of his classic tome. John L. Stewart was a professor at Swarthmore College (Pennsylvania) and member of the History Club at the University of Pennsylvania. The invoice of Philadelphia bookseller Charles Sessler, dated 4-27-1960, selling to Dr. Morton McMichael of Maine for the purchase of this book, laid in. BAL 31. Lot Amendments Condition: Slight wear to slipcase; light shelf wear and rubbing to volume, scattered faint stains, other mild wear; hinges tender, 3" marginal tear to pp. 159-160; still a near fine copy in a fine chemise and slipcase.
