Special Presentation copy, one of only 100 copies. First Edition. Inscribed and signed by Henry Adams on preliminary printed leaf titled "Travels France" and signed: "For John L. Stewart, with the regards of Henry Adams, March 19, 1907." The next Adams book to be published after this one was his most famous, The Education of Henry Adams (1907), for which this copy of Mont Saint Michel and Chartres is inscribed in the first year of his classic tome. John L. Stewart was a professor at Swarthmore College (Pennsylvania) and member of the History Club at the University of Pennsylvania. The invoice of Philadelphia bookseller Charles Sessler, dated 4-27-1960, selling to Dr. Morton McMichael of Maine for the purchase of this book, laid in. BAL 31.
