President Monroe balances his accounts: "I enclose you an order on the bank of Columbia for the amount of Mr. Bibbs draft on me, which I will thank you to present three or four days hence, if not inconvenient to you. On the claim of Lindsay & Hill of Alex[andri]a, I will give you an answer in a day or two. I did not suppose that I owed them any thing, and shall write to morrow for information respecting this account which the pressures of business heretofore prevented my doing..."
